Born on 18th July 1955, Dr. Jose Mathew obtained his Ph D in Agronomy from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He joined as Scientist in the Kerala Agricultural University on 19/12/1977 and has worked in different capacities in various institutions under KAU viz., Cardamom Research Station, Pampadumpara; Agronomic Research Station (Including CARC), Chalakudy; Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pattambi; College of Horticulture, Vellanikkara and Cashew Research Station, Madakkathara. He presently works as the Associate Director of Extension in the Directorate of Extension, Mannuthy since 19/06/12 and holds the full additional charge of the Professor and Head of Communication Centre, Mannuthy since 11/6/2014.

Dr. Jose Mathew has contributed 30 technologies in the Package of Practices Recommendations (Crops) of Kerala. He was involved in the release of two rice varieties and one cashew variety.

He has Implemented 114 research projects as Principal and Associate Investigator, including 40 farmer participatory programmes.

He has published 84 research papers in journals and 104 research papers in seminars/symposia, 23 books, 21 book chapters/training manual, 27 technical bulletins/ leaflets/reports and 116 extension articles.

He has attended 94 seminars/trainings/other assignments, including 4 international programmes. He has undertaken an assignment for UNIDO on cashew apple processing in Tanzania during 2007-08. He has attended international symposiums at Brisbane during 2004 and Kampala during 2010. He has attended a training course at Manila during 2004. He has organized a National Symposium at Vellanikkara during 2004 and a National Group Meeting of AICRP on Cashew during 2005.

He has organized 101 trainings for various stakeholders, which includes one international training (organized by KAU for the first time) on cashew for participants from Senegal during 2009 sponsored by USAID. He has handled 241 classes in trainings for farmers and officers and delivered 45 programmes in electronic media.

He has guided four MSc(Ag) students and two PhD students and handled nine courses in agronomy for graduate and post graduate programmes.

Dr. Jose Mathew and his team were instrumental in developing twelve technologies for the economic utilization of cashew apple. Of these, ten technologies were commercialized at the Madakkathara Centre for the production of eight value added products.

Dr. Jose Mathew has taken leadership in the establishment of a Cashew Museum, State Level Model Cashew Apple Processing Unit and a Small Scale Cashew nut Processing Unit at Madakkathara Station.

He has served as the Councilor for Kerala in the National Executive Council of the Indian Society of Agronomy during 1991-92, 2001-02, 2003-05 and 2011-13.Dr. Jose Mathew is currently serving as the Governing Body Member of the Kerala State Agency for Expansion of Cashew Cultivation (KSACC).

He was the first recipient of the “PS Deshmukh Young Agronomist” National Award of the Indian Society of Agronomy during 1995. He was conferred as the Fellow of the Indian Society of Agronomy for 2007” during 2010. He was the recipient of the BOLT Award during 2004 instituted by Air India and Malayala Manorama to recognize excellence in education
