Career beyond conventional tracking- An interaction with a global expert in genomics

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology organized an interactive session with Dr. Bony De Kumar, a global expert in genomics on 20 November 2023 about “Career beyond conventional tracking”.

Dr. Kumar, an alumnus 95 batch of CoA, Vellayani is presently the Director of Operations, Yale Genome Analysis Center at Yale University. His area of expertise includes stem cell biology, genomics and related technology, genome engineering and data analysis using R and bioconductor. He leads projects on extensive use of next generation sequencing techniques, single molecule studies and technologies employing microfluidics systems

K. B. Soni, Head of the department gave welcome speech followed by a keynote address by Dr. Roy Stephen, Dean of Faculty. The session provided valuable insights into navigating the diverse landscape of biotechnological careers. Dr. Kumar shared his personal academic journey, offering a glimpse into the transformative experiences that shaped his expertise in Genomic studies. He stressed the impact and significance of horizontal skill transfer and that biotechnologist can move easily between different specializations because of its multidisciplinary nature.

An integral part of the talk centered on the balance between hard and soft skills crucial for success in biotechnology. He emphasized the need for proficiency in laboratory techniques, molecular biology, and bioinformatics as fundamental hard skills while the soft skills being effective communication, adaptability and problem-solving.

The talk provided a holistic perspective on building a career in biotechnology and instilled confidence in the possibility of adapting and switching fields within the dynamic realm of biotechnology. The session could inspire participants to think beyond traditional career paths in Agriculture / plant biotechnology and consider the multitude of exciting opportunities available in the dynamic and rapidly advancing field.
